STRONG DANCING SONG (SHOUT SONG #1)

Composed by Howard Bad Hand in 1977 for the Rosebud Fair and performed as an inter-tribal song. The song was rearranged and words added in February 1984, and performed at Albuquerque, New Mexico. On this album, it was used as the Grand Entry Song.

lyokipic'iya wau welo.
Akis'as'a, winyunskinyan, kola, waunci
yelo.
Wokiksuyin ktelo.
Was'agya waunci yelo.

I come to enjoy myself.
Shouting, joyfully, fried, we are dancing together.
There will be memories.
Strongly we are dancing together.

HONOR SONG FOR BEAUTY QUEENS

Composed by Pat Bad Hand in the spring of 1984 as a traditional honoring song for dancers. In this album, the song was sung to honor all of the Princesses and Beauty Queens of the Taos, New Mexico area.

Waci winyan k'un, inanjin nan hiyu wo!
Kola heya pelo,
"Leciya, oskate wan tehikelo!"

Dancing Woman, stand and come this way!
Friends are saying,
"Over here, a celebration is having a difficult time!"

TRADITIONAL SONG

Composed by Pat Bad Hand in February 1985 while driving through the San Luis Valley in Colorado.

Oyate ki kawita au welo.
"Oskate wan iyayktelo," eyapi ca wau welo.
"Wancala wiconi yelo!" eya wau welo

The people are gathering together.
"A festival will be going on," they said, so I come.
"(People) live only once!" saying this, I come.

JENNIFER'S LULLABY

Composed by Tom Teegarden in February 1985 while completing an all night drive home from a South Dakota powwow. While other group members awoke and joined in the singing, Jennifer Skeet slept through it all and thus earned the dedicationfor this song. It was first performed during the Gathering of Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, February 1985.

ERIN AND ERIKA'S SONG (SHOUT SONG #2)

Composed by Howard Bad Hand in February 1985. Takoja performed it as the first Grand Entry Song for the 1985 Denver March Powwow. It is done here as an intertribal.

Waci wicasi ki akis'as'a heya au welo,
"Wacipi can, iyokipic'iya wau welo.
Omakiyayo! Winyuskinyan, waci
wicohanki unkayin ktelo!"

The dancers shouting come saying this,
"When they dance, I come to enjoy myself.
Help me! Joyfully we will take the dancing
ways onward together!"

WILLIE BAD HAND'S SONG

Composed by Willie Bad Hand
In the early seventies, Willie worked on a ranch near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. One day while riding a tractor, the repetitious hum of the engine gave him this song. It was performed by Red Leaf for the first time at the '75-'76 New Year Celebration in St. Francis, South Dakota. The version on this album is shortened from it original length but it still retains the beauty of the song and the strength of its performance.
