Black Matter

My cradle language was the jazz and, later, hip-hop one heard everywhere, at home, in the streets, on the radio in my Brooklyn neighborhood of those years. In the streets around my home the horns were incredible. A riff from a hidden saxophone would ring out. From down the block or around the corner, another unseen horn belted out a response. I was immersed in music; it became my umbilical cord to life.

Each of the first eight songs on this recording was inspired by a segment of my past. The ninth song, Ancient Mother, is from the present day and celebrates my everyday relation-ship with the feminine/mother aspect of the god force. — Christine Autumn

A Living Hoop: Songs for Celebrating Life

Spirited singing from the Jackie Anderson Benefit Powwow in January, 1989 at the Taos Pueblo Community Center and from a house warming party for Tom Teegarden and Jennifer Skeet upon their move to Taos New Mexico. It’s the first recording of Red Leaf Takoja since a majority of the group now live in Taos. Singing for the sheer joy of singing — listen in the same manner — if you want to dance, dance!

Live at Taos Blue Lake Powwow

Recorded live as Host Drum for the First Annual Taos Blue Lake Powwow at Taos, New Mexico, July 13, 1985. An all time favorite on the powwow circuit. Contains powerful "oldies but goodies.” Words to each song in original Lakota language with English translations on the insert.

Traditional and historical warrior society and victory songs. Sung by a group known through four generations as traditional songkeepers for the Sicangu (Rosebud Sioux) Tribe. Lakota words to each song, with English translations, on the insert.

Howard Bad Hand and Tom Teegarden sing with authentic pace and volume, accompanying themselves with hand drums just as they would in ceremony. This is as close to the real thing as you can get outside of an actual ceremony!

Sacred Songs of Native American Healing: Songs To Learn By

Howard Bad Hand sings at slower pace and lowered volume to aid persons wishing to learn the songs. By recording one track and then singing along with himself on subsequent tracks, Howard sings all parts in a three part harmony. This an excellent recording for non Lakota speakers to hear the words of each song clearly pronounced by a native Lakota speaker.
